From cereals to candy to cosmetics, Red Dye No. 3 has long been a staple in U.S. products. But recently, it’s made headlines, and not for its vibrant hue, but for its potential health risks. California became the first state to officially ban Red Dye 3, along with other controversial ingredients like brominated vegetable oil and potassium bromate. More states are now considering similar measures.
Sooo why the shift? Mounting research suggests that some artificial food dyes may be linked to behavioral issues in children, hormone disruption, and even carcinogenic effects in animal studies. Red Dye No. 3, in particular, has been banned in cosmetics since 1990, yet remained legal in food, until now.
The FDA has been slow to update regulations compared to the European Union, where many of these ingredients have long been restricted, but consumer advocacy and increased public awareness are pushing the conversation forward. The new Secretary of Health, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, is making a huge push to try and clean up our food resources.
So what can you do?
Start by reading labels! Look out for ingredients like FD&C, Red No. 3, Yellow 5, and other synthetic dyes. Choose whole foods with minimal additives, and if you’re unsure about your body’s toxic burden, consider advanced diagnostic testing. Tests like heavy metal screenings, food sensitivity panels, and gut health assessments can reveal how these chemicals may be impacting your system. At BioCure, we specialize in these tests, so if you have any questions about them, or want to take a deep dive into your blood work….we can help.
At BioCure Health, we’ve seen firsthand how inflammation and metabolic dysfunction often stem from environmental toxins, including additives in food or just simply food quality. That’s why we emphasize detox support, liver health, and cellular optimization in our protocols.
Bans like these aren’t about fear, they’re about moving toward a future where “what” we put into our bodies supports long-term health. If you’ve never looked into how these ingredients affect you, now is a great time to start.
