Staying Healthy During Flu Season

As we enter spring, many people may believe that the flu season is now behind us. The reality, however, is that flu season can last as late as May. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses like the flu is more important than ever. In order to avoid falling ill with the flu, it is important for people to continue taking precautionary measures. BioCure has put together some steps that you can take to stay safe and healthy during flu season.

Important Information On The Flu

What Is The Flu?

In order to be better prepared for flu season, we must first understand what the flu is. Flu is a common viral infection caused by influenza viruses. These viruses can infect the nose, throat, and sometimes lungs. This is important to note because COVID-19 can greatly impact lung health, so preventing the spread of both is essential. Symptoms of the flu vary from person to person but in severe cases it can lead to death.

Flu Symptoms

Tracking your symptoms is extremely important. Influenza (flu) usually comes on suddenly, and those who have the flu will often feel some or all of these symptoms:

  • Fever/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle and body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

Unfortunately, the symptoms for the flu and COVID-19 are quite similar. However, there are a few distinctions that should be noted. People infected with the coronavirus will often have a dry cough as opposed to a wet cough caused by the flu. Additionally, those with the coronavirus experience shortness of breath even when doing mundane activities.

When Is Flu Season?

In the United States, flu season takes place in the fall and winter. While the flu can circulate year-round, the highest amount of cases are usually recorded between December and February. However, flu season has been known to extend until May. The overall impact that the flu has, such as infections, hospitalizations, and deaths, varies yearly. This is why it’s imperative that we do everything in our power to prevent the spread of the flu this season since we don’t know how it’s going to unfold, especially with coronavirus prevalent.

Tips For Staying Healthy

The best way to stay healthy during flu season is to eat well, get enough sleep, and take vitamins. These three actions are critical for ensuring a strong and healthy immune system. Additionally, practicing good health habits can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. Avoid others who may be sick or have been around people who are sick. If you happen to get sick, keep your distance from others and try to stay inside as much as possible. Also, washing your hands often will help prevent the spread of germs. Always use soap and water and make sure to clean thoroughly. Lastly, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth especially when in public. By practicing these healthy habits, you will help prevent the spread and keep you and your family protected.
