How To Age Backward: A Closer Look At Telomeres

Aging is inevitable, but there are ways to slow it down. The root of aging is in our telomeres; they are sections of genetic material at the end of each chromosome. Telomeres become shorter with age because of cell division. Each time a cell divides, it becomes shorter and shorter until they are unable to replicate. This process results in the signs of aging. Here’s all you need to know about telomeres and its role in the aging process.

Telomeres & Aging

Telomeres are often compared to the ends of shoelaces; they are protective caps at the end of DNA to keep them from fraying. Telomeres allow cells to divide without losing genetic material. Without telomeres, the ends of chromosomes could fuse together and compromise the integrity of the genes, causing malfunction, cancer, or cell death. Cell division is necessary for growing new skin, blood, and other cells.

The result of aging cells is an aging body. Telomere length can indicate someone’s biological age, and shorter telomeres are associated with shorter life spans. When cells cannot replicate any longer, they can’t function properly, which causes aging.

Three Ways To Protect Telomeres

Some healthy strategies can help protect and reduce damage to telomeres. The foundation for lengthening telomeres, and overall health, are these three components:

  1. Eating Habits – A healthy diet is often overlooked when it comes to anti-aging. Having balanced eating habits can help lengthen telomeres. Some studies show that a plant-based diet is positively associated with protecting telomeres while processed meat has been known to cause damage to telomeres. No matter which route you decide to go, there are some important truths about food.  Some foods that support telomeres are leafy greens, unrefined grains, legumes, seeds, and antioxidant-rich foods. While reducing sugary drinks and alcohol is recommended. Supplements that we recommend are Vitamin D, Folate, and Omega 3 to support telomere health.
  1. Stress Management – Living a stress-filled lifestyle is harmful to your physical and mental health. People with chronic stress are linked to shorter telomeres and accelerated aging. Meditation is a proven way to reduce stress, we love Transcendental Meditation. There are also some supplements that can help your Adrenal glands support your body’s response to stress.   Another great way is by incorporating yoga into your daily routine.
  1. Physical activity – Exercising regularly can preserve telomere length. Engaging in physical activity directly decreases oxidative stress and inflammation in the body, helping to prevent telomeres from damage. Athletes tend to have longer telomere lengths. Exercising 20-30 minutes a day is essential for everyone, regardless of telomere length. Those who exercise regularly are more likely to have a longer lifespan. Good news is that yoga can be applied here also!

Stay Young With Biocure

Telomeres go hand in hand with the aging process. The key takeaway is to live a healthy lifestyle to prolong the signs of aging and prevent the side effects of shorter telomeres. There are still studies being conducted worldwide to learn more about telomeres’ impact on our health and aging. But, it’s agreed that eating healthful foods, sleeping an adequate amount, getting regular exercise, and reducing stress are factors in protecting telomeres.

Testing the length of your telomeres is the only way to know your treatment options and if any lifestyle changes need to be made. At Biocure, we can test telomere lengths and determine if any action needs to be taken.
