Health Risks Of A Sedentary Lifestyle

We’ve all heard the phrase “couch potato” at least once in our lives but this is actually a serious problem within adults in the United States. In more proper terms, being a couch potato means living a sedentary or inactive lifestyle. A sedentary lifestyle is defined as a type of lifestyle where an individual does not receive regular amounts of physical activity. In the United States, people are spending more time doing sedentary activities and not receiving proper exercise. Whether it’s because of one’s job or just simple laziness, living a sedentary lifestyle can lead to many health risks in life.

Sedentary Lifestyle Health Effects

What Are The Health Risks?

Having an inactive lifestyle can be one of the causes of many chronic diseases adults face in our country today. By not getting any physical exercise, you raise your risk of obesity, anxiety/depression, high blood pressure, and even heart diseases. People who are constantly inactive have a weaker cardiovascular system as opposed to someone who runs every day. Working the heart and cardiovascular system is important to increase oxygen flow and keep your blood pressure stable as you age. This is especially significant in the U.S. where many adults are considered obese or overweight. Having a sedentary lifestyle can also raise your risk of premature death and, the more sedentary you are, the higher your health risks are.

Sedentary Jobs

So why do so many Americans live an inactive lifestyle? One major cause is the rise in technology and sedentary jobs. Technology has brought about inactive modes of transit, caused an increase in sedentary desk jobs, and has developed more activities that can be done while sitting such as watching television or playing video games. Overall, sedentary jobs have increased roughly 80% since 1950 and physically active jobs now make up only about 25% of our workforce. This large fluctuation in jobs has created a work environment where most people aren’t getting any physical exercise. However, just because technology has taken over, doesn’t mean we can’t be active in our daily lives.

How Can I Get Started With Exercise?

If you have been living an inactive lifestyle, you should start slowly. You can gradually start adding more exercises as time goes by so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Just by doing a little bit of walking a day you have taken a step toward a better and healthier life. There are many different types of exercise so it’s important to find the best exercise for you and your lifestyle. Whether it’s a daily walk around the neighborhood or going to the gym 3 times a week, living an active lifestyle will greatly benefit you and your overall health.
